Teachers leaving the profession has become a topic of public interest. The phenomenon shows that, due to sometimes contradictory demands, teachers are increasingly deciding against taking up or continuing their teaching careers. There can be various motives and career paths behind this decision. The articles in this special issue therefore analyse, from a professional theory and professional culture perspective, how teachers deal with crises in their profession and what types of exit strategies are evident in the teaching profession.
