Produktdetails
This anthology examines the complex sociolinguistic conditions of language contact between speakers of Greek and Turkish. Adopting a diachronic perspective and in a geographical area ranging from Anatolia to Istanbul and the Aegean, Sociocultural Aspects of Greek-Turkish Language Contact(s) explores the cultural, ideological, and political factors that have significantly influenced the grammatical and lexical interplay between the two languages. The contributions address a fascinating array of topics, including the Inner Asia Minor dialects spoken in Cappadocia and Central Anatolia, the Turkish-speaking Orthodox population of Anatolia, Ottoman grammars authored by Greeks, the Istanbul Greek lexicon in both Ottoman and modern contexts, the Pontic dialect still spoken in Turkey’s Black Sea region, as well as the contemporary Turkish variety spoken on the island of Rhodes. This broad scope provides a comprehensive view of Greek-Turkish language contacts as a dynamic process shaped by historical transformations, social developments and rich cultural exchange.
